About
Why I built this.
Hi, I’m David. Obsidian runs my life, but PDFs kept getting in the way: I was always hunting for a tool to convert one or edit one. ZIP files made it more interesting, because an archive can hold anything, so an editor that opens one has to open whatever is inside. I thought it would be fun if it could open every kind of document there is, and I have been building toward that ever since.
There is no ai inside Golem Docs, on purpose. Every document is an ordinary file in a folder on your computer, so the ai you already use can read it, tidy it up and write new notes next to it. What it changes shows up in the app a few seconds later, and, with sync, on your other devices within about a minute.
Much of the code was written with Claude, with me steering. I promise I could have written it myself, but it would have taken years.
Missing something? Ask, and it goes in the app.
Golem Docs has no plugin store, and it won’t get one. Plugins made sense when a missing feature meant weeks of someone’s spare time. With ai helping me write code, a missing feature can just be built, so I build it into the app, with tests, instead of leaving you to find an add-on.
That keeps things simple. There’s no third-party code running next to your documents, a new feature looks and works like the rest of the app in all 11 languages, and when the app changes, the feature changes with it.
If there’s something you do in a document that Golem Docs can’t, or a file type it doesn’t open, tell me at david@golemdocs.com, or with Help › Send Feedback in the app. I can’t promise a date, but what people ask for often gets built first.
