Golem Docs - Privacy Policy

Golem Docs (golemdocs.com) is a document editor that runs in your browser. This page says what we collect, why, and what we do with it. It is a document like any other, so you can read it here or download it from the File menu.

The short version

• You don't need an account. Without one, your documents stay in your browser and are never sent to us.
• If you sign in, we keep your name, your email address and your documents so they follow you between devices.
• We don't sell your data, we don't show ads, and we don't use analytics or advertising trackers.

What we collect

Documents you don't sign in for. Opening, editing and converting a document happens on your device. Documents are saved in your browser's own storage (IndexedDB). We never receive them. Clearing your browser's site data removes them.

Your account, if you sign in. You can sign in with Google, Microsoft, GitHub or Apple. We ask each provider only for your basic profile: a stable identifier, your name and your email address (and whether the provider has verified it). For Google that is the openid, email and profile scopes, and nothing else. We use them to recognize you, to show your name to people you share with, and to join the same person's sign-ins from different providers when they report the same verified email address. We never see your password for any provider.

Documents you save to your account. Signed in, documents are stored on our servers so you can open them anywhere. Each account's documents are kept in a database of its own, and the files themselves are kept in encrypted cloud storage.

Documents you share. When you share a document or open a shared link, the people you share with can read it (or edit it, if you allow that), and live editing sends your changes, your name and your cursor position to the others in the document. The link or the people you choose decide who has access.

Feedback. If you use Help ▸ Send Feedback, we keep your message along with your account, so we can read it and reply.

Sign-in cookie. Signing in sets one cookie that holds a random session token. It is needed to keep you signed in, lasts 30 days, and we store only a hash of it. We set no advertising or tracking cookies. The app also remembers a few choices, such as your language, theme and the last document you had open, in your browser's local storage on your device.

Technical logs. Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, processes requests to deliver the site and to keep it secure and fast. This includes your IP address and basic request information. We don't use that to build a profile of you.

How we use it

Only to run Golem Docs: to sign you in, store and sync your documents, let you share and edit together, keep the service secure, and answer your feedback. We don't sell or rent your information, and we don't use it for advertising.

Google user data

Golem Docs' use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements. We use your Google name, email address and profile only to sign you in and identify your account. We do not share it with anyone else, use it for advertising, or let people read it, other than what is needed to run the service or to comply with the law.

Who we share it with

• Cloudflare, which hosts the app, the database and the file storage that make up the service.
• The sign-in provider you choose (Google, Microsoft, GitHub or Apple), which knows that you signed in to Golem Docs.
• People you share a document with, as described above.
• Anyone the law requires us to, if we receive a valid legal request.

How long we keep it

Documents and account details stay until you delete them or ask us to delete your account. A session ends after 30 days or when you sign out. Deleting a document removes it from your account.

Your choices

• Use Golem Docs without signing in, and nothing leaves your browser.
• Sign out at any time from the account button. Clear local data there to remove what this browser has stored.
• Ask us to see, correct or delete the information we hold about you, including your whole account, using the contact below. If you sign in with Google you can also remove Golem Docs' access from your Google Account's security settings.

Children

Golem Docs isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information. If you think a child has given us any, tell us and we'll delete it.

Changes

If this policy changes, we'll update the date at the top. If a change is significant, we'll say so in the app.
