Write and edit Word documents

Golem Docs is a real word processor. It opens Word documents, lays them out the way Word does, and saves them back as .docx. Pages, fonts, tables, columns, comments, and equations behave the way you'd expect, and you don't install anything or sign in.

Pages that look like the page

The editor draws each page itself, in Word's own fonts or their open-source stand-ins, so what you see is how the document prints. Switch between Print Layout and a Normal view that fills the window and reflows as you resize it. Turn on formatting marks to see paragraph ends, spaces, and tabs.

Everything a document needs

Text formatting: font, size, and color, bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, superscript, and subscript, highlighting, change case, and clear formatting.
Paragraphs: alignment, line spacing, indents, bullets, numbering, and a Paragraph dialog for widow control, keep with next, and page breaks.
Styles and Format Painter, to copy the look of one paragraph onto another.
Columns: one, two, or three, with spacing and a line between, applied to a section, the whole document, or from the cursor forward.
Page Setup: margins, orientation, and paper sizes including Letter, Legal, A3, A4, and A5.
Tables: a grid picker to insert one, add or delete rows and columns, merge and split cells, and move between cells with Tab.
Links: Ctrl+K (Cmd+K on a Mac) adds a link to the selection.
Comments: select text and choose Comment from the Insert menu.

Equations

Choose Insert ▸ Equation and write math the way LaTeX does, such as \frac{a}{b}, x^2 + \sqrt{y}, or \sum_{i=1}^{n} i. Palettes for structures, Greek letters, operators, and relations help you build one, and a preview shows the result as you type. Equations are laid out with TeX-style typesetting, saved as native Word equations, and carried through to PDF, Markdown, and HTML.

Find, replace, and check

Find, Replace, and Go To in one dialog, with match case and replace all.
Spelling and grammar on F7, or as you type with red and green squiggles. Right-click a mark for suggestions. Grammar catches repeated words, a and an, capitals, and common mix-ups such as their and there.
Word Count for the selection or the whole document.
Properties for the title, author, and other document details.

It saves itself

There is no Save button. Every change is kept in your browser a moment after you make it, works offline, and shows up under File ▸ Open. Sign in and your documents are saved to your account, so they follow you to any device.

Word files in, Word files out

Golem Docs reads .docx, .docm, and .dotx, and the older .doc format. It keeps what the document contains and saves .docx. To work in another shape, use Convert To and change back when you like.
