Redact a PDF in your browser

Redact blacks out part of a PDF page and removes the text under the box from the file, so it can't be copied out later. It runs in your browser, so the document you are hiding things in is never uploaded anywhere.

How to redact

1. Open the PDF. Drop it onto Golem Docs, or choose File ▸ Open.
2. Switch to Edit PDF with the button at the top right of the PDF.
3. Choose Redact and drag a box over what should disappear.
4. Download the PDF. Nothing is written into the file until you download it, and what you get is a complete, new PDF.

Redact or White Out?

• Redact removes the text under the box from the file.
• White Out only covers the page with white. What is underneath stays in the file, so don't use it for anything private.

If a picture is only partly under a redaction, it stays whole under the box, and the page tells you when that happens.

Good to know

• Scanned pages are pictures. There is no text to remove, so cover the area with Redact or White Out.
• Rotated, vertical, and outline-only text can't be edited, but Redact still removes it.
• Pictures, too, can be redacted in their own editor, by pixelating or covering what to hide. See editing pictures.
